It's been more than a month now since debbiecoll.com was launched! I've put up a brand spanking new post every two weeks with a few writing and creative tips for you to journey with me. This week you can read five things I've learnt from a book I didn't enjoy reading - The Three Secret Cities by Matthew Reilly. Have you read it?
\n(Here's one bonus thing I've taken from that series... italics. Reilly uses it to emphasis his writing all the time, and now when I write, I have to actually stop myself from italicising random words for unnecessary emphasis 😅. I'm hoping I get out of the habit soon!)
\nWhat are some unexpected places you learnt valuable things?
\nHave a great weekend!

What have you read this month? What's a story someone told you that stayed with you? Since I graduated from my degree in composition in 2022, one conversation with a classmate has been in my mind. We were talking about a subject called Improvisation, taught by an elderly composer who was respected in the avant garde music scene in Melbourne. He was a great teacher--he loved experimental music and music from other cultures, and had a very open mind. But most of what he...","campaignId":15691637,"publicationId":12216432,"metaDescription":null},{"id":4934238,"title":"POV: you're a worm who got invited to the elf-king's party 🥳","slug":"pov-you-re-a-worm-who-got-invited-to-the-elf-king-s-party","status":"published","readingTime":4,"campaignCompletedAt":"2024-02-29T10:29:03.000Z","publishedAt":"2024-02-29T10:29:03.000Z","orderByDate":"2024-02-29T10:29:03.000Z","timeAgo":"about 1 year","thumbnailUrl":"https://functions-js.convertkit.com/playbutton?play=%23ffffff&accent=%23b85537&thumbnailof=https%3A%2F%2Fyoutu.be%2Fhw4DVcfb8ww&width=480&height=270&fit=contain","thumbnailAlt":null,"path":"posts/pov-you-re-a-worm-who-got-invited-to-the-elf-king-s-party","url":"https://bookballadiers.com/posts/pov-you-re-a-worm-who-got-invited-to-the-elf-king-s-party","isPaid":null,"introContent":"Hello legend-lovers! How are you? How was your February? This month, I've been mainly teaching music in schools and setting up the Book Balladiers: composing for our first few customers and writing the February newsletter. My writing goal for the month was to finish the second draft of The Mistwaes Home, and I only have 3 chapters to go! But before I finish that, I need to write this email XD. Remember me? XD How was your Christmas and New Years? Do you have goals for 2024? Finishing 2023 with a full head and a weary body, I looked over everything I wanted to do in 2024 and thought... that's too much. 😅 So I'm pulling back; focusing on achievable and worthwhile goals, and aiming to set time aside to rest and enjoy simple joys from day to day. How's your month of May going? What's been exciting you lately?
Do you like scary stories? 😁
If you don't, or if you're uncomfortable with talk of supernatural beings, feel free to skip the next few paragraphs. Under the page-break there's a little announcement I think you'll like ;)
For those still with us... let's talk about Erlkonig.
Erlkönig was originally a ballad by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and it was put to music by composer Franz Schubert. It tells the story of a father and his son, riding home through the woods one night being pursued by the erlking, which is kind of a goblin or evil woodland spirit common in German folklore. The erlking calls to the son, bribes him and tries to lure him away from his father. The son tells his father, but he can't hear the erlking, and tells the son it's only the shadows of the trees he can see. But when he gets to the cottage... well, I'll let you watch the video and find out :)
(If you don't speak German, there's an English translation in the description of the link I attached ;) )
And here's an interesting musical analysis of the song, if you're interested in that side of things. (It's where I accidentally found out about it!)
Have you found an intriguing story? I'd love to hear it!
